Job Summary:

The Culinary Specialist is responsible for preparing and cooking meals for older adults and seniors, coordinating meal preparation, and providing other support duties to promote health and safety of clients and other staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Meal Preparation: Prepare and cook a wide variety of regular and special diet meals (including Chinese, South Asian, and Western) according to prescribed or planned menus.
  • Inventory Management: Take inventory of supplies on hand and order required food supplies, ingredients, and other consumables on a scheduled basis as determined by menu and estimated number of clients.
  • Quality Control: Check and inspect deliveries of food supplies for quantity and quality of items and reject or return incorrect items or poor quality of fresh products.
  • Program Support: Coordinate meal preparation for various center programs.
  • Hygiene and Safety: Report to supervisor about all existing or potential hygiene, safety hazards, and quality improvement.
  • Maintenance and Cleaning: Maintain kitchen equipment, report to supervisor about needs of purchase, necessary repairs, and any safety concerns in a timely manner. Clean and sanitize all food preparation equipment and ensure they are kept in safe and operable condition on a daily basis.

Requirements:

  • Education: Community College Diploma in Food Services and/or Nutrition, or equivalent.
  • Food Handler Certification: Required.
  • Experience: Experience in preparing meals for 35 people or more. Experience in food services for older adults, seniors, or others with menu planning, including special diets, an asset.
  • Skills: Good organizational and time management skills. Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Experience working in a culturally diverse environment. Ability to speak a second language is an asset.

Additional Requirements:

  • Vulnerable Sector Screening: Required.
  • COVID-19 Vaccination: Proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or Medical Exemption Certificate required.
