Job Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Carman Helper to join our team at Genesee & Wyoming Inc. The selected candidate will be responsible for the maintenance and repairs of rail cars and their components, with on-the-job training provided.
Responsibilities
- Ensure a total commitment to safety in the workplace, adhering to all G&W safety and environmental rules.
- Inspect car components for compliance with AAR, FRA, and customer requirements and standards.
- Perform scheduled, on-request, and preventative maintenance and repairs on all types of railcars as identified by the Railcare work order.
- Operate oxy/gas torches, hand tools, pneumatic tools, hydraulic tools, electric and battery-operated tools, jacks, lift trucks, skid steers, mobile cranes, overhead cranes, welding machines, and company vehicles safely and efficiently.
- Repair, remove, or replace components using the correct and appropriate tools and equipment required for the task.
- Complete all required paperwork in the course of railcar repairs.
- Set up work areas and equipment, including equipment inspections, for welding machines, torches, tools, etc.
- Use Blue Flags and Derails safely and properly.
- Perform mobile repairs as required.
- Clean the shop and facilities as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Welding experience preferred.
- Frequent bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, performing overhead work, lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds (22kg), and occasionally up to 85 pounds (39kg).
- Physically and mentally able to work at heights up to 30 feet (9.25m).
- Good grasp of the English language, including good reading and writing skills.
- Basic knowledge and familiarity with hand tools, pneumatic tools, hydraulic tools, electric and battery-operated tools, and other equipment.
- Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions.
- Valid driver's license required.
