Mental Health Professional in the Canadian Armed Forces

As a mental health professional in the Canadian Armed Forces, you will play a crucial role in supporting the morale, efficiency, and mental well-being of CAF members and their families. You will deliver clinical social work services similar to community mental health and social services agencies.

Candidates for this position must be prepared to cope with additional stresses associated with frequent moves and separations, which can give rise to complex social work interventions. Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Providing clinical intervention services to support mental health and well-being
  • Assisting in the resolution of compassionate situations that may arise
  • Consulting with and advising leaders on social circumstances encountered by personnel in their units
  • Investigating and reporting compassionate situations as required
  • Delivering preventive and rehabilitative programs in areas such as pre- and post-deployment stress, suicide prevention, and family violence
Work Environment

You will work in an office at a base, wing, or garrison, and deploy overseas on operational missions. Collaboration with civilian social agencies may be necessary to develop referral contacts and stay abreast of current professional development and social legislation.

The work environment is varied, with opportunities to make a meaningful impact on the lives of CAF members and their families. As a member of the Primary Reserve Force, you will typically work one night per week and some weekends, with possibilities of full-time employment.

To apply for this position, candidates must hold a Master of Social Work degree from an accredited Canadian Social Work Program, a current unrestricted license to practice as a social worker from a provincial or territorial regulatory authority/association, and a letter of 'good standing' from that authority. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in clinical social work, with experience working with diverse populations and a deep understanding of military culture and operations.

The estimated salary for this position is around $70,000 - $90,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience. Benefits include comprehensive health and dental insurance, pension plan, and access to on-site fitness facilities.
