About the RoleWe are seeking an experienced Duty Counsel to join our team at Legal Aid Ontario. As a key member of our criminal duty counsel services, you will provide critical support to clients navigating the justice system.
Job OverviewThis is a unique opportunity to work with vulnerable populations, including racialized communities, youth, and those experiencing mental health or addiction challenges. You will be responsible for:
- Providing client service for criminal law matters in courtrooms, both virtually and in person;
- Representing clients at bail hearings, guilty pleas, and remands;
- Offering summary legal advice to clients in or out of custody;
- Working with specialty courts, including Mental Health, Gladue, Domestic Violence, and Youth Courts;
- Maintaining high-quality legal work while ensuring cost-effectiveness;
- Filing management, data input, and referrals as required;
- Collaborating with colleagues to ensure seamless delivery of services.
To succeed in this role, you must have:
- A strong background in criminal law and experience working with vulnerable populations;
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice or public interest work;
- Solid knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada, Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and related laws;
- Excellent communication, presentation, and negotiation skills;
- Strong advocacy skills in the Ontario Court of Justice;
- Proven judgment and analytical ability to determine appropriate legal remedies;
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities;
- Proficiency in computer-based file management systems, Microsoft Office, and video conferencing platforms.
We offer a competitive salary of $65,000 - $85,000 per annum, depending on experience, plus a comprehensive benefits package, professional development opportunities, and a dynamic work environment.
