Sign Language Interpreter

We are seeking a skilled Sign Language Interpreter to join our team at the York Region District School Board. As a Sign Language Interpreter, you will play a critical role in facilitating communication between students who are deaf/hard of hearing and their peers, teachers, and support staff.
Key Responsibilities- Translate spoken language to sign language and sign language to spoken language in various settings, including regular classes and integrated settings.
- Prepare and gather knowledge of classroom materials in advance to ensure a thorough understanding and provide clear interpretation.
- Ensure appropriate seating, lighting, and unobstructed space is available for students who are deaf/hard of hearing to access the interpreted message.
- Participate in educational team meetings, including the development and review of progress on student Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
- Liaise between the teacher of the deaf and regular teachers regarding issues arising in regular classes that may impact student progress.
- Assist in writing daily anecdotal reports, record, and help with ongoing reporting of student programs, and act as a resource person for parent/teacher interviews.
- Provide note-taking services for deaf/hard of hearing students as necessary, when interpreting is not required.
- Assist the teacher of the deaf with inservicing staff, parents/guardians, students, and others regarding the needs of students who are deaf/hard of hearing and accommodations/modifications of these needs.
- Work as an active member of the school team to ensure the safety and success of all students.
- Attend meetings as required and attend professional development sessions/training as required.
- Secondary School Graduation Diploma with a three-year recognized community college diploma or university degree from an accredited interpreter training program.
- Minimum one year related experience.
