About the Role

This position is designed for a male counselor to work with boys and young men, using a feminist-based, trauma-informed, anti-racist/anti-oppression and harm reduction lens in all aspects of engagement. The role involves strengths-based, trauma-informed individual and group counseling to support male youth develop coping skills and build resilience.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Perform needs assessments of clients with sensitivity, empathy, and cultural competence, involving the youth and their family members as active participants when appropriate.
  2. Conduct comprehensive clinical assessments for youth exposed to domestic violence, considering physical, emotional, and psychological well-being.
  3. Risk assessment and safety planning to identify immediate or long-term risks to the youth's safety and any other family members' well-being.
  4. Evaluate the extent of trauma experienced by the youth due to exposure to domestic violence.
  5. Developmental assessment, considering the developmental stage of the youth and how exposure to domestic violence may have impacted their developmental trajectory.
  6. Psychosocial assessment, exploring the youth's social support system and identifying protective factors or sources of resilience.
  7. Behavioral assessment, evaluating the youth's behavioral responses to stress and trauma.
  8. Family assessment, assessing the dynamics within the family system and identifying family strengths or challenges that may impact the youth's well-being.
  9. Cultural assessment, considering the cultural background and beliefs of the youth and their family, and gathering information from other sources to gain a comprehensive understanding of the youth's situation and needs.
Skills and Qualifications
  • A Diploma or Degree in Social Work, Psychology, or Child and Youth Worker from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in trauma-informed crisis counseling, including group work.
  • Working knowledge of the Mental Health Act Ontario, Child Protection Act, Ontario Human Rights Code, etc.
  • In-depth knowledge of the issues of gender-based violence and the impacts on children and youth.
  • Extensive knowledge of community resources, including resources for individuals with precarious immigration status, relevant legislation and social justice issues.
