Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Laboratory Technologist to join our team at the William Osler Health System. As a Medical Laboratory Technologist, you will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks related to histology, including grossing, embedding, and cutting tissue specimens.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Grossing and Embedding: Examine, describe, dissect, and measure small and large gross surgical specimens of varying tissue types.
  • Tissue Processing: Embed processed tissue, check embedding logs, and investigate errors or discrepancies.
  • Microtomy and Staining: Cut paraffin wax tissue blocks using a microtome, make, label, stain, and cover slip slides as appropriate.
  • Equipment Operation and Maintenance: Operate and maintain IHC stainers and other equipment.
  • Frozen Sections: Prepare frozen sections as required.
  • Slide Correlation: Correlate cut slides to tissue blocks.
  • Deeper Levels: Cut deeper levels as required.
  • Slide and Block Filing and Archiving: File and archive slides and blocks.
  • Assist with MLA Duties: Assist with Medical Laboratory Assistant duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Medical laboratory technologist with CSMLS certification.
  • Minimum five years recent experience in general histology in a hospital setting.
  • Immunohistochemistry experience is preferred.
  • Current registration with CMLTO in good standing.
  • Ability to distinguish colors.
  • Comfortable dealing with surgical and autopsy specimens and the deceased.
  • Strong medical terminology is required.
  • Strong multi-tasking, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills; strong interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to be a team player; able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of LabLion, Meditech, Paradigm, and other Microsoft Office computer systems would be an asset.
  • Must demonstrate Osler's Values of Respect, Excellence, Service, Compassion, Innovation, and Collaboration.
  • Excellent attendance, punctuality, and work ethic.
  • Required to travel between and work at all Osler sites.

Additional Information:

Hours: Currently Days/Evenings/Nights, including weekends and statutory holidays, and must be available to attend Osler sites after hours and during emergencies (subject to change in accordance with operational requirements).
