About the Role

The Counsel, Environment and Indigenous Affairs is a critical position within Counsel Treuhand GmbH, responsible for providing expert advice on environmental and Indigenous law matters. This role plays a key part in ensuring the company's Canadian operations comply with relevant laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance on environmental and Indigenous law matters to internal clients, including the Environment and Indigenous, Real Estate, P&SM, and HR departments.
  • Conduct research and review documents to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Collaborate with external counsel to provide written and verbal advice on environmental and Indigenous law matters.
  • Advise on permits required for construction projects, jurisdiction issues, capacity projects, new regulations, and corporate and commercial matters.
  • Manage external counsel and contribute to the development of legal strategies for litigation issues.
  • Provide advice on applicable regulations during emergency situations.
  • Collaborate with CN departments to produce public reports.
  • Work with internal clients on compliance programs, including internal review of compliance with specific regulations.

Requirements

  • Minimum 10 years of experience with environmental and Indigenous law.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Law.
  • Member of a Provincial Bar.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with an ability to summarize complex legal issues and make them accessible and easy to understand for a variety of internal clients.
  • Fosters diverse representation, and diversity of thought and experience as a strategic advantage.
  • Influences by translating expertise into practical business outcomes.
  • Deals with pressure and change by staying calm to quickly adapt to changes.
  • Political acumen.
  • Knowledge of environmental and indigenous laws in Canada, as well as constitutional law and transport law.
  • Fluently bilingual both written and verbal (English, French).
