Job Summary

Torstar is seeking a skilled Reporter to join our team in Peterborough. As a Reporter, you will be responsible for producing high-quality, trustworthy journalism using excellent reporting and researching skills, including data analysis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research and write engaging news articles on municipal issues, focusing on community impact and civic institutions.
  • Conduct interviews with local officials, residents, and experts to gather information and insights.
  • Take quality photographs for publication, capturing events and information outside of structured work hours.
  • Generate fresh and interesting story ideas, working closely with the managing editor to consistently produce local newsworthy stories.
  • Produce engaging multi-media content for website and social media outlets, including video and audio posts.
  • Travel throughout the community to capture events and information, including evenings and weekends.

Requirements

  • At least one year of experience working in a newsroom environment.
  • Strong interviewing, social media, and online journalism skills.
  • Proven news judgment and a strong work ethic.
  • Photography skills.
  • Ability to work in a virtual newsroom.
  • Must be prepared to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Must have access to a vehicle and a valid driver's license.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written (Canadian Press Style).
  • Effective organizational skills, ability to manage time and prioritize tasks appropriately.
  • Ability to excel in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Team-oriented individual that can build professional relationships with team members.
