Electrical Substation Technician

As a skilled professional in the field of electrical maintenance, your qualifications as a certified Journeyperson Substation Electrician will be fully leveraged in this rewarding position with The MEARIE Group as an Electrical Substation Technician.

Under the guidance of the Electrical Maintenance Supervisor, you will be responsible for the inspection, upkeep, and modification of substation, subdivision, and network electrical systems along with their associated equipment.

This role requires regular engagement with hazardous materials, working near heavy traffic, and operating in confined spaces.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

In your capacity as an Electrical Substation Technician, your duties will include:

  • Working on energized lines and equipment up to 27.6 KV.
  • Inspecting, testing, installing, maintaining, and repairing substation electrical apparatus, including circuit breakers, transformers, reclosures, load-break switches, meters, batteries, chargers, and protection and control relays.
  • Installing and maintaining network systems, including transformers, protectors, high-tension switches, and related electrical equipment.
  • Conducting tests and obtaining regular load readings.
  • Installing and maintaining various electronic control telemetry devices within electrical substation circuits.
  • Installing, testing, and maintaining supervisory cables with up to 150 pairs.
  • Testing and locating faults in high-voltage cables.
  • Performing switching operations.
  • Handling and testing oil with PCB content.
  • Modifying and implementing changes to electrical schematics.
  • Preparing and maintaining necessary reports, material lists, drawings, as-built prints, and requisitions.
  • Inspecting electrical installations executed by external contractors.
  • Utilizing various testing equipment.
  • Assisting other departments with scheduled and emergency tasks as required.
  • Supporting the training of apprentices and learners.
  • Participating in standby duty as per a designated schedule.
  • Complying with all Occupational Health & Safety Act regulations, the E&USA rule book, and The MEARIE Group's work practices and Health & Safety Management System.

REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate for the Electrical Substation Technician position should meet the following criteria:

  • Graduation from a Community College Electrical Engineering Technician program or equivalent.
  • Possession of a Class G Driver's Licence (a valid driver's licence and the ability to drive are essential for fulfilling the job's core responsibilities).
  • Certification as an MEA Journeyperson Substation Electrician is preferred. Candidates who do not meet this requirement may still be considered.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position is $36.05 to $51.50 per hour.
