Position Overview:

The Quality Assurance Engineering Specialist will report directly to the Metallurgical and Quality Assurance Manager. This role involves utilizing Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methodologies to uphold the quality standards of production by implementing, refining, and enforcing effective manufacturing practices. Responsibilities include validating NDT procedures, maintaining testing equipment, and ensuring comprehensive documentation. Additionally, the technician will assist the QA Lab in performing physical, chemical, and metallographic evaluations of products to meet the high performance standards set by Laurel Steel.

Key Responsibilities:

Material Identification:

• Assessing material properties throughout production using:

• Spectrometer analysis

• Element composition evaluation

• Lead and spark testing

• Heat identification through elemental correlation to detect flaws

Quality Testing:

• Conducting visual inspections and quality assurance assessments on various samples, including:

• Hardness assessments

• Tensile strength evaluations

• Yield strength testing

• Area reduction analysis

• Elongation assessments

• Coating evaluations

• Fabric weld examinations

• Basic metallurgy and metallography

• Identifying material defects that may lead to unreliable product performance or failure.

• Compiling results and generating technical documents and graphs to communicate inspection findings.

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT):

• Collaborating with experienced technicians to employ NDT techniques for non-intrusive evaluations of materials and components, ensuring their functionality remains intact, including:

• Calibration of testing equipment

• Maintenance and repair of test coils

• Troubleshooting to minimize noise and signal issues

• Identifying mechanical defects

• Locating and sizing indications using liquid penetrant and magnetic particle testing methods.

• Compiling results and generating technical documentation to report inspection outcomes.

Preventative Maintenance:

• Regularly changing filters and cleaning air conditioning units.

• Maintaining power supply units and inspecting for movement on NDT housings.

• Performing weekly audits on blasters and checking encoder tightness.

Tagging and Documentation:

• Re-tagging non-compliant materials and determining the necessity for off-line processing.

• Assessing the severity of issues with quarantined materials.

• Deciding on re-tagging quarantined materials based on specified criteria.

• Updating material barcodes and ensuring accurate documentation in the inventory system.

Additional Skills and Responsibilities:

• Conducting daily verifications of laboratory testing equipment.

• Calibrating spectrometers.

• Performing capability studies on diameter and length.

• Reporting results for Production Part Approval Processes (PPAPs).

• Adhering to lock-out/tag-out safety procedures.

• Verifying instruments and recording data accurately.

Qualifications:

• Diploma in Quality Engineering Technology, preferably with a focus on Non-Destructive Testing.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

• Attention to detail and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

• Excellent organizational skills with the capacity to manage multiple tasks.

• Willingness to work rotating shifts and overtime as necessary.
