Job Summary

The Clinical Extern is an integral member of the healthcare team, providing support to patients and families in inpatient and outpatient care units at Hamilton Health Sciences. As an unregulated care provider, the Clinical Extern will work collaboratively with the interprofessional healthcare team to deliver high-quality care and promote a positive patient experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver patient care, including head-to-toe assessments and vital signs
  • Promote patient safety through falls risk assessments and skin assessments
  • Assist with activities of daily living and other nursing interventions as assigned or delegated by the nurse
  • Work effectively in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate strong communication and organizational skills
Qualifications
  • Enrolled in the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of an approved baccalaureate nursing program, or the 2nd, 3rd, 4th semester of the practical nursing program with completion of 1 in-person clinical placement
  • Internationally Educated Nurses who have initiated registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and meet one of the following criteria:
    • Enrolled in a CNO-approved program
    • Completing a micro-credential plan with a curriculum to meet CNO requirements for registration
    • Completed educational requirements and waiting to write their registration exam
  • Demonstrated evidence of excellent academic standing
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated strong communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated infection prevention and control practices
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated successful completion of a recent clinical placement
Working Conditions

The Clinical Extern will work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, supporting a wide range of patient populations. The position is part-time and temporary until March 31, 2025.
