Job Summary

The Team Lead, Systems Administration is responsible for the day-to-day management and administration of BC Children's Research's enterprise server infrastructure and related systems. This includes all file, print, application, web, messaging and database systems, as well as core infrastructure applications and functions such as networking equipment, storage, backup and virtualized VMware environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership, guidance and supervision of staff using effective leadership techniques coaching, mentoring, and skills and leadership development.
  • Provides work direction to assigned staff including monitoring requests received and distribution of work ensuring response times and other performance targets are met in accordance with established guidelines; assists staff with unresolved issues; referring unresolved problems to the Director.
  • Coaches team members and determines related orientation and training needs through methods such as discussing individual and team goals, clarifying requirements and discussing progress. Gathers information regarding performance issues and determines what to forward to Director for consideration.
  • Leads and coordinates work assignments and ensures appropriate staff coverage by developing and maintaining a staffing schedule, organizing work flows and re-prioritizing work according to changing demands.
  • Responsible for the procurement of research related IT Infrastructure equipment purchased both with grant and operating funds; ensures purchases are aligned with PHSA and Funder policy and works to secure most competitive pricing.
  • Provides specialized technical expertise to BC Children's scientific programs in all aspects of IT infrastructure and operating systems including, server design, installation, web, database, security and storage environments. Implements solutions that promote the integration of technologies based on industry standards, research direction and requirements of funder.
  • Provides specialized technical expertise and support in all aspects of organization-wide infrastructure and operating systems including file and print, web, database, messaging, anti-virus, storage environments. Implements solutions that promote the integration of technologies based on industry standards.
  • Coordinates and implements system upgrades and system tuning to ensure maximum performance, security and stability of servers, including capacity planning (storage, processor, memory, bandwidth, etc.) for current and anticipated loads in response to policy, client requirements or technology related to server systems.
  • Documents technical support procedures, for such areas as hardware/software installation and testing, and ensures system documentation is developed and maintained, including backup schedules and disaster recovery planning. Develops and communicates plans for planned downtime. Provides after hour support related to server hardware and applications.
  • Takes part in major problem reviews with other members of IT department and makes suggestions for network, services availability and performance improvements; participates in change management, evaluation and planning processes as a part of Change Advisory Board; suggests workflows and procedures used by Systems Administrators.
  • Maintains close communications with the Team Lead, Service Desk and Team Lead, Programming. Liaises with other information systems groups by networking to ensure awareness of new developments within the research community and industry, exchanging information and maintaining currency. Participates in projects and meetings on an ad hoc basis, as required.
  • Maintains close communications with counterparts at Partner Universities and external vendors
  • Leads and supervises the technical delivery of projects undertaken by staff, ensuring effective use of technical resources.
  • Provides technical consulting related to the acquisition of new systems and standards or the implementation of new applications on existing systems. Prepares technical whitepapers and develops business cases that assist decision making processes. Installs, configures, tests and maintains hardware and software in support of approved projects.
  • Maintains an awareness of current information system trends and issues through literature review, contact with peers at other organizations and attendance at seminars, workshops and educational programs.
