Position Overview

North Island College is seeking qualified candidates to instruct in the Early Childhood Care & Education Diploma program.


This sessional teaching role involves delivering the course ECC 246: Practice Experience – Infants and Toddlers to a group of part-time ECCE diploma students through in-person instruction. Practicum placements will occur in community practice environments and may necessitate travel. Candidates must have access to reliable transportation.

*Important Note:
One instructor is needed in each of the following areas: Ucluelet and Port Alberni.


The successful applicant will employ innovative strategies in the preparation and execution of practice activities; demonstrate initiative in addressing student concerns and resolving issues; and exhibit facilitation skills in managing conflicts.

The schedule for this position will be adaptable to accommodate the program's requirements.


Faculty at North Island College are responsible for actualizing the College's vision, goals, and objectives as they pertain to teaching and learning.

To fulfill their teaching responsibilities, faculty members utilize organizational skills, interpersonal skills, and their expertise in subject matter, pedagogy, and curriculum design.

Additionally, they are expected to serve as role models for both students and colleagues.

The responsibilities and typical duties outlined below represent a general job description for teaching faculty responsible for delivering scheduled classes, supporting self-paced, online, and distance courses, and/or providing instruction and supervision in laboratories and practicums, etc.

Duties & Responsibilities
1.0 INSTRUCTIONAL
  • Plan and prepare educational materials for instructional settings;
  • Utilize diverse approaches and resources to cater to various learning needs;
  • Teach assigned subjects and ensure all required content is included in courses and outlines;
  • Guide student learning in a supportive and nurturing environment;
  • Be available to students during scheduled office and classroom hours to discuss their progress and any issues affecting their learning. (30 hours/week);
  • Clearly communicate learning outcomes for programs and courses, along with evaluation methods;
  • Design and conduct assessments of students, keeping them informed of their progress;
  • Submit grades promptly, in accordance with reporting policies;
  • Maintain records of student enrollment and performance, and submit final records to the department Chair at the end of employment.
2.0 TYPICAL PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF INSTRUCTIONAL FACULTY
  • Stay informed of and work within College educational policies;
  • Be aware of the Education and Strategic plans, contributing to their development and assisting in achieving their goals;
  • Advise the Department Chair on necessary orders for books, supplies, and equipment to ensure adequate inventories for courses;
  • Provide input to the Department Chair regarding enrollment management strategies;
  • Report any health and safety concerns to the Department Chair and assist in resolving issues;
  • Demonstrate knowledge of relevant computer applications for the teaching environment;
  • Engage in continuous professional development to maintain competencies and qualifications;
  • Actively participate as a contributing member of the College community on committees and other activities;
  • Attend department meetings and participate in departmental activities during normal working hours, when feasible;
  • Undertake additional responsibilities and duties as assigned by the College when course load permits.
Required Education & Experience
  • A degree in Early Childhood Care and Education or a related field, including a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree, or a Bachelor’s degree with a commitment to pursue a Master’s degree; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience;
  • A minimum of three years of experience in Early Childhood Care & Education settings and/or teaching in an Early Childhood Care & Education program with practicum supervision experience;
  • Current knowledge of community-based Early Childhood Care & Education issues and experience in collaborative problem-solving;
  • Familiarity with Indigenous pedagogies and culture;
  • Recent teaching experience at the postsecondary level and/or experience teaching adult learners;
  • Experience in curriculum development, including design for teaching/learning technologies;
  • Active membership in ECEBC in good standing.

  • Commitment to contemporary Early Childhood Care and Education philosophies and practices;
  • Experience employing a variety of engaging and motivating methods to enhance learning in both distributed and classroom environments;
  • Ability to demonstrate effective teamwork, support collaborative relationships, and contribute to shared goals;

  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills;
  • Familiarity with online learning management systems, such as D2L Brightspace, is an asset;
  • Proficiency in computer applications, internet usage, and MS Office software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams;
  • A valid BC driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle are required.
