Position Overview
This position is classified as Hybrid, requiring the employee to be present at a Company location for 2-3 days each week while having the flexibility to work from home on occasion.
Industrial Light & Magic is on the lookout for a Senior Lighting Technical Director (TD) to become a vital part of our team. The Senior Lighting TD plays a crucial role in delivering top-notch lighting and rendering for intricate visual effects shots in films and animated features. This position involves providing initial guidance and mentorship to the team while supporting production efforts.
We seek an imaginative professional who exemplifies creativity, production excellence, collaboration, and a deep passion for filmmaking that characterizes ILM.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Supervisors and Production on key visual shots, offering constructive feedback and support to artists
- In the absence of Lighting Supervision, assist CG Supervisors with lighting shot tasks
- Analyze and replicate color and light source directions for CG accuracy
- Design and construct lighting setups and aesthetics for computer-generated objects and environments
- Oversee the final assembly of CG scenes, including lighting and rendering of complex shots
- Work in close partnership with Lighting and CG Supervisors to address technical challenges and refine the final visual presentation
- Develop light rigs and operate within established configurations
- Create rendering configurations to enhance output efficiency
- Support Lighting Artists in troubleshooting technical issues
- Guide and mentor artists within the Lighting and Look Development teams
Qualifications
Education / Experience:
- 7+ years of relevant professional experience in VFX
- A degree in computer graphics, fine arts, design, or a related discipline
- Proficiency in real-world lighting and photography techniques
- Extensive experience in Lighting and Rendering within a VFX context
Essential Skills / Competencies:
- Strong listening and interpersonal abilities
- Comfortable providing and receiving constructive feedback
- Exceptional aesthetic judgment, with the ability to foresee challenges and devise solutions
- Skilled in mentoring junior artists
- Proficient in task prioritization, time management, and providing accurate estimates
- Excellent presentation and communication capabilities
- Able to thrive in a team-oriented environment with minimal oversight
- Capable of working independently with little supervision
- Quick to learn new techniques and software applications
Technical Proficiencies:
- Familiarity with Renderman and/or other rendering technologies
- Experience with Katana, Maya, and/or Zeno is advantageous
- Able to develop tools, create macros, and set up sequences
- Understanding of lighting methods and color-space principles
- Basic knowledge of shading techniques, VFX workflows, LUA, and opScript
- Familiarity with compositing software such as Nuke
- Strong knowledge of Linux operating systems
The compensation range for this role in Vancouver is C$122,400 to C$156,800 annually. Weekly hours may vary based on business requirements. A comprehensive benefits package may be available.
