Position Overview

Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, the Acting Financial Controller plays a pivotal role within the finance leadership team, overseeing essential functions for corporate entities and registered education savings plans.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Financial Management: Ensure timely monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting close processes, including comprehensive controls such as account reconciliations.
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare and present financial statements on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis. Collaborate with the Financial Planning & Analysis team to review and interpret balance sheet and income statement data for executive and board presentations.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Manage the preparation and submission of all necessary regulatory filings, ensuring adherence to timelines and standards (e.g., OSC, SEDAR, StatCan).
  • Audit Coordination: Serve as the primary liaison for external auditors, leading the audit process and managing deliverables. Support internal audits by identifying risk areas and coordinating reviews with relevant business units.
  • Implementation of Accounting Standards: Stay abreast of new accounting regulations (IFRS) and develop strategies for effective implementation. Prepare detailed accounting memos for auditors and the Audit Committee.
  • Tax Compliance: Collaborate with tax professionals to prepare and file corporate tax returns and GST/HST submissions. Oversee the issuance of annual tax documents to beneficiaries, agents, and employees, along with the management of sales tax remittances.
  • Treasury and Cash Flow Management: Act as the primary contact for banking relationships, ensuring the timely maintenance of accounts and authorizations. Oversee cash management operations, including cash movement processing, forecasting, and account reconciliations.
  • Commission Management: Ensure accurate administration of commission payments to sales representatives, including necessary adjustments.
  • Accounts Payable Oversight: Manage the timely processing of accounts payable, ensuring proper documentation and authorization for expenditures.
  • Development of Policies and Procedures: Create and maintain Standard Operating Procedures and Policies, ensuring compliance with internal controls for accurate financial reporting.
  • Process Improvement Initiatives: Identify and implement enhancements to finance processes, ensuring efficiency and control.
  • Project Leadership: Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders on finance-related projects, including technology upgrades and product launches.
  • Team Leadership: Supervise accounting, treasury, and commission teams, conducting performance reviews and providing coaching and mentorship to support professional growth.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration
  • CPA designation preferred
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience, including public accounting and controllership roles
  • Experience in the financial services sector, particularly in fintech, is advantageous
  • Familiarity with wealth and asset management is a plus
  • Understanding of accounting and reporting for corporate entities and investment structures
  • Strong commitment to customer service and stakeholder engagement
  • Proven track record of leading high-performing teams
