Job Overview

As a vital member of the Environmental Services team, the Porter is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of patients, equipment, and various items within the healthcare facility. This role involves utilizing different methods such as wheelchairs, stretchers, or beds as required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to established protocols in line with the patient flow system.
  • Effectively use hand-held technology for task management.
  • Safely transport patients, medical charts, specimens, pharmaceuticals, and necessary equipment to various treatment and diagnostic areas throughout the facility.
  • Collect and sanitize equipment as needed.
  • Assist with facility transport tasks as directed.
  • Support nursing staff with patient lifts by locating and providing necessary equipment and assisting in the transportation of patients and specimens.
  • Manage the transport and exchange of blue ware, case carts, and crash carts.
  • Operate the wheelchair washer.
  • Utilize Real Time Locating Systems (RTLS) to track wheelchairs, beds, and stretchers.
  • Respond promptly to Code Medical situations with the appropriate transport equipment.
  • Actively engage in team activities, training sessions, and mandatory meetings.
  • Perform other assigned duties as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma (Grade 12) is required.
  • Relevant experience in a similar environment is essential.
  • Proficiency in using technology on hand-held devices to complete tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate stretchers and wheelchairs.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English to understand and convey instructions effectively.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for interacting with patients, visitors, and medical staff.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, multi-task, and manage time effectively in response to changing needs.
  • Physical capability to perform all job functions, including standing for extended periods, walking, reaching, bending, pushing, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work independently while following specific instructions and schedules.
  • Willingness to work in environments with potential exposure to infections and other hazards.
  • Adaptability to various clinical settings and ability to handle stressful situations positively.
  • A satisfactory employment and attendance record is required.

Additional Information:

Employment Status: Full-time

Work Schedule: Monday to Sunday; 8-hour day shifts.

Salary: Competitive hourly rate.
