Position Overview:
Under the guidance of the Starbucks Supervisor, the Barista and Sales Specialist will play a vital role in the seamless operation of the Starbucks outlet at Vancouver Island University, ensuring the promotion of products and services in alignment with Starbucks' esteemed standards of quality and customer service. This role is situated in a dynamic, high-demand environment.
The Barista and Sales Specialist will be responsible for preparing and serving a variety of food items, including specialty beverages, hot sandwiches, pastries, cold drinks, and snacks, while maintaining strict adherence to quality standards. The individual will also assist in upholding cleanliness standards that comply with FoodSafe and health authority regulations. The role involves operating the Point of Sale (POS) system and related equipment to process transactions swiftly and accurately. Responsibilities include handling various payment methods such as cash, credit, debit, gift cards, and Starbucks Cards, as well as balancing the cash drawer at the end of each shift. The incumbent will manage inventory by counting and receiving merchandise, identifying low-stock items, restocking shelves, and implementing merchandising strategies as necessary. A strong product knowledge will be developed through familiarization with the product range.
Effective communication between shifts is essential to ensure smooth operational transitions. Participation in opening and closing procedures, as well as year-end inventory counts, is required.
The Barista and Sales Specialist will address customer inquiries and concerns, escalating issues to the Supervisor when necessary, and will serve as a representative for Ancillary Services on campus. Adherence to the Starbucks dress code and personal appearance standards is mandatory.
Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Grade 12 diploma, current FoodSafe I certification, and a minimum of one year of experience in food service. A combination of education and experience may be considered. Experience with POS systems, accurate cash handling, and end-of-day float balancing is essential. Prior experience in a specialty coffee environment and Barista training is preferred. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a proven ability to deliver exceptional customer service, work effectively under pressure, and collaborate well within a team or independently. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, along with excellent communication abilities in person, by phone, or online, are required. Punctuality, dependability, and flexibility to work evenings and weekends are necessary. The ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a positive attitude is crucial.
Note: Successful candidates will be required to complete the Starbucks Barista Certification during the probationary period.
