The University Secretariat plays a crucial role in overseeing and facilitating the University's dual governance framework, ensuring compliance with legal standards and obligations, the University of Western Ontario Act, as well as the bylaws and regulations of the Senate and Board, alongside best practices in governance. The Secretariat is also responsible for managing appeals (academic, conduct-related, and issues related to gender-based and sexual violence) and overseeing convocation ceremonies and select corporate services.

Your Key Responsibilities

As the Legal Specialist (Appeals & Policy), you will serve as the legal authority on student academic and non-academic appeal processes within the University Secretariat's office. You will hold primary accountability for the supervision and effective operation of the Senate's and Board's highest-level student appeal tribunals, ensuring adherence to both University policies and legal standards governing such tribunals. Additionally, you will provide policy interpretation, guidance, and strategic advice to senior academic leaders across Faculties regarding student appeal matters and other academic issues, ensuring compliance with Senate and Board policies.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate possesses strong analytical capabilities, complemented by influential interpersonal skills that foster positive relationships across all organizational levels. Your comprehensive understanding of governing bodies and their decision-making processes, along with the ability to delegate authority effectively, will be instrumental in your success in this position.

You hold a Bachelor of Law (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited Canadian law school and maintain active membership in the Law Society of Ontario. You are licensed to practice in Ontario and are in good standing with a minimum of 5 years of experience in administrative hearings, appeal processes, and policy development and review.
