Job Responsibilities:

This role represents a significant level of oversight and specialized expertise in engineering, focusing on the planning and execution of complex projects with a degree of autonomy and coordination of critical assignments. Responsibilities may encompass both engineering and supervisory tasks.

Senior Engineer or Project Engineer Responsibilities:

  • Independently executes tasks with a clear understanding of expected outcomes.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in at least one engineering discipline.
  • Plans and manages personal workload, requiring initiative and independent decision-making.
  • Innovates and proposes substantial design alterations to fulfill functional specifications.
  • Creates novel solutions to challenges within the engineering specialty.
  • Oversees detailed phases of engineering work within a major project or extensive project scope.
  • Engages in conventional engineering practices while addressing complex issues such as conflicting design criteria and challenging coordination needs.
  • Evaluates the feasibility and integrity of proposed engineering methodologies.
  • Utilizes extensive knowledge of engineering precedents and principles across related fields.
  • Recommendations are typically accepted as technically sound and are evaluated for overall judgment quality.
  • As a project engineer, holds primary responsibility for coordinating technically intricate and commercially complex work or significant components of large-scale projects, defining project scope, communicating client needs, and monitoring progress.
  • Work is assigned based on objectives and priorities.
  • As a Senior Engineer, provides technical mentorship and leadership to junior engineers and technical staff.

Section Supervisor Responsibilities:

  • As a Section Supervisor, this role includes ongoing responsibility for supervising other engineers, alongside performing Senior Engineer duties.
  • Plans, coordinates, and oversees an engineering section engaged in technical issues or multiple smaller assignments that require extensive knowledge of engineering principles.
  • Reviews technical documentation prepared by supervised employees.
  • Prepares inputs for and monitors budgets, estimates, schedules, and work packages.
  • Coordinates with other teams to establish necessary interfaces.
  • May employ advanced techniques and modify established practices within their field.
  • May engage in hands-on technical work and problem-solving.
  • Independently resolves engineering challenges and methods for supervised personnel.
  • Represents the section in meetings focused on problem resolution and project planning.
  • Supervises, coordinates, and reviews the work of engineers and support staff, ensuring schedules are met.
  • Provides input for performance evaluations and may influence decisions regarding training and discipline.

Qualifications:

  • A relevant honors degree in Engineering or Science from a recognized institution.
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience; advanced degree experience may be considered.
  • Familiarity with computer systems; proficiency in both Linux and Windows environments is advantageous.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of thermal-fluid sciences, including fluid dynamics, heat transfer, multi-phase flow, and thermodynamics.
  • Experience with safety and licensing software such as CATHENA, NUCIRC, GOTHIC, and MAAP is beneficial.
  • Proficiency in programming, particularly in FORTRAN, is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of CANDU design, especially regarding heat transport systems and plant control.
  • Solid grasp of engineering principles and practices.
  • Experience in licensing processes is a plus.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and adapt to changing project demands.
  • Demonstrated initiative in a collaborative environment.
  • Capability to adhere to budgetary and scheduling constraints.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for meetings and workshops.
  • Commitment to operating within a formal quality assurance framework.
