The Pharmacy Technician functions in alignment with the competency guidelines and standards of practice as defined by the College of Pharmacists of British Columbia, as well as applicable legislation and organizational protocols. This role involves the processing of medication orders that have been clinically assessed for therapeutic suitability and sanctioned by a pharmacist. The technician receives both verbal and written prescriptions from healthcare providers, ensuring their completeness and authenticity. Responsibilities include preparing, processing, and compounding prescriptions while ensuring accuracy and thoroughness in dispensed medications, whether prepared by oneself or by others. The technician also manages prescriptions for temporary patient absences and facilitates the transfer of prescriptions between pharmacies. Accurate entry and maintenance of drug and personal health information in the pharmacy information system is essential. Additionally, the technician is responsible for inventory management and performing assigned clerical tasks.
Key Responsibilities
- Process medication orders that have been clinically reviewed and approved for patient distribution.
- Receive and verify prescriptions from healthcare providers, ensuring they are complete and authentic.
- Prepare and process prescriptions by entering orders, measuring, counting, and packaging medications, including compounding sterile pharmaceutical products as per established protocols.
- Verify the accuracy and completeness of dispensed prescriptions, conducting final checks as necessary.
- Ensure accurate entry of drug and personal health information in the pharmacy information system.
- Manage the transfer of prescriptions to and from other pharmacies.
- Process prescriptions for temporary patient leave by reviewing and converting inpatient medication orders approved by a pharmacist.
- Maintain accurate records, including medication verification and quality assurance results.
- Distribute medications and maintain relevant inventory and narcotic records.
- Fill requisitions for wardstock and narcotics while managing inventory levels.
- Identify and manage outdated medications for return or disposal.
- Maintain cleanliness and order in the department work areas, ensuring safe disposal of hazardous materials.
- Perform clerical duties such as data entry, answering calls, and maintaining medication records.
- Undertake additional related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Candidates must possess:
- Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the College of Pharmacists of British Columbia.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration.
- Physical capability to perform the duties required.
- Proficiency in keyboarding and operating relevant equipment.
- Organizational skills to manage workload efficiently.
- A commitment to understanding and learning about the Truth & Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action and related reports.
- A dedication to fostering meaningful reconciliation in Canada.
- Knowledge of the social, economic, and historical contexts affecting Indigenous communities is a valuable asset.
