The Telesat Lightspeed initiative, our groundbreaking Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network, is set to transform global broadband connectivity for enterprise users by offering a unique blend of high capacity, security, resilience, and affordability, all with ultra-low latency and fiber-like speeds.

Headquartered in Ottawa, Canada, Telesat operates various offices and facilities globally.

The company's advanced fleet comprises 15 GEO satellites, the Canadian payload on ViaSat-1, and one LEO 3 demonstration satellite.

Our employees typically work from the office from Tuesday to Thursday, allowing for flexibility on Mondays and Fridays to work in environments where they feel most productive. This arrangement encourages collaboration, problem-solving, and the development of trusted relationships, enabling our team to come together three days a week to innovate and excel.

The System Design team collaborates closely with System Modeling and System Engineering to architect and develop the Lightspeed constellation's end-to-end system. This encompasses several critical elements, including:

  • End-to-end communication
  • Resource allocation mechanisms
  • Network entry mechanisms
  • Network element management systems
  • Service availability
  • EPFD compliance and coordination mechanisms
  • Satellite payload power consumption management
  • Resource utilization efficiency
  • Spectrum management
  • User terminal type integration
  • Concepts of operation

Key responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to define the Lightspeed system architecture, system requirements, and specifications for network elements (including satellites), ensuring alignment with project objectives and customer needs.
  • Contributing to the design and development of essential aspects such as communication, resource allocation, and network management.
  • Providing technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers within the System Design team.
  • Developing and maintaining comprehensive Lightspeed system architecture documentation, including subsystem definitions, interfaces, and data flows, to guarantee optimal system performance and reliability.
  • Working with the System Integration and Test team to strategize the integration and testing of all components of the Lightspeed constellation system.
  • Identifying and managing technical risks associated with system design, developing mitigation strategies and contingency plans as necessary.
  • Engaging with external partners, vendors, and stakeholders as required to ensure project success.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with software-defined satellite communication payloads.
  • Familiarity with regulatory bodies and standards within the space industry.
  • A creative problem-solver with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Understanding of business considerations and practical limitations in system design and implementation.
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken; proficiency in French is an asset.
  • Proficient in using computers running Windows and Linux.

The successful candidate must be eligible to work in Canada and obtain clearance under the Canadian Controlled Goods program (CGP).
