The Physiotherapy Trainee is accountable to the Rehabilitation Services Manager and is responsible for assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients in a tertiary care environment who present with actual or potential impairments, pain, functional limitations, or disabilities under the guidance of a licensed Physiotherapist.
The assessment process involves gathering a comprehensive medical history, conducting specific and standardized tests, and evaluation procedures to establish a physical diagnosis.
Holistic treatment plans are formulated utilizing exercises, education, and various techniques including manual, mechanical, electrical, and hydrotherapy to assist patients in regaining and/or maintaining optimal functionality.
The Physiotherapy Trainee is educated and engages with other health professionals, the general public, family members, and caregivers regarding health promotion, physiotherapy treatment, and patient management.
As an integral member of a clinical team, the Physiotherapy Trainee collaborates with colleagues to set team goals and objectives, participates in evaluating team effectiveness, and addresses challenges while sharing responsibilities.
Qualifications include a Bachelor's degree or entry-level master's program in Physiotherapy from an accredited institution, membership with the Nova Scotia College of Physiotherapists (Provincial licensing body), and proficiency in computer skills (statistics input, word processing, Outlook).
WHMIS training and certification, along with additional courses/education/training in specialized areas of practice such as cardio-respiratory techniques, acupuncture, stroke rehabilitation, manual therapy, and balance training, are also required.
Competencies in additional languages are an asset, with French being preferred.
