CLINICAL EXTERN POSITION (24-R391)

Employment Type: Full Time TEMPORARY

Department: Varied Inpatient Units

Location: St. Joseph's Hospital

Work Schedule: Days/Evenings including Weekends

Compensation: $20.60 per hour


The Clinical Externship Program offers a valuable opportunity for actively enrolled students across various disciplines to develop their skills in a practical environment.

Clinical Externs will function as unregulated healthcare providers, delivering fundamental clinical support to patients and their families.

This role involves collaboration with a multidisciplinary healthcare team under the guidance of a designated regulated healthcare professional.

Required Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

  • Nursing students at any level enrolled in a CNO approved baccalaureate or diploma nursing program, or
  • Students in an accredited Occupational Therapy program, or
  • Students in an accredited Physiotherapy program, or
  • Students in the second year of the Paramedic program, or
  • Students in the second or third years of the Respiratory Therapy Program, or
  • Internationally Educated Nurses (IEN) who have initiated registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and meet one of the following:
  • Are in any year of study in a CNO approved program, such as BScN-IEN program, PN-IEN program, or
  • Are completing a microcredential plan with a curriculum to meet the CNO requirements for registration, or
  • Have completed their educational requirements and are awaiting their registration exam.
  • Preference will be given to students who have recently completed a clinical placement.
Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, along with creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities relevant to the situation and scope of practice.
  • Proven knowledge of infection prevention and control protocols.
  • Commitment to client-centered care.
  • Effective decision-making, organizational, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team as well as independently with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including email communication and electronic documentation.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Demonstrated reliability in attendance at work.
Employment Conditions

  • Successful completion of a Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) is required.
