This role is part of our Good Shepherd - Non-Profit Homes - Toronto

As an Addictions Counselor, you will collaborate with a dedicated team to improve the dignity and quality of life for adults grappling with substance use challenges, other addictions, and the impacts of homelessness.

Your Impact

  • Conduct thorough assessments and develop tailored service plans for clients, including necessary referrals.
  • Facilitate activities that promote healthy living, focusing on relapse prevention, community involvement, and skill development.
  • Deliver direct programming to clients, including harm reduction techniques, life skills training, crisis intervention, and advocacy.
  • Foster collaborative relationships with other health and social service providers to ensure comprehensive access to resources for clients.
  • Work alongside the Program Manager to evaluate program referrals and maintain communication with referring partners.
  • Accurately document interactions with clients in accordance with organizational standards.
  • Maintain records of service statistics and client documentation as required.
  • Participate in on-call duties during evenings and weekends on a rotational basis.
  • Engage in Good Shepherd's Health and Safety initiatives, adhering to the Occupational Health and Safety Act to minimize risks for clients and staff.

Qualifications

  • A university degree in Social Work, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, or a related field, along with an Addictions Certificate from an accredited institution and a minimum of two years of relevant experience.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, and electronic health record systems.
  • Familiarity with the social service landscape and community resources in Toronto.
  • Knowledge of the Residential Tenancies Act and related housing topics is advantageous.
  • Experience in counseling and case management for individuals with complex substance use histories, utilizing techniques such as motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral therapy.
  • Ability to facilitate group sessions and deliver programming to diverse participants.
  • Experience with assessment tools such as ADAT, GAINS, and OCAN is a plus.
  • Understanding of best practices in substance use treatment, harm reduction, trauma-informed care, and therapeutic relationships.
  • Strong crisis intervention skills and problem-solving abilities, complemented by excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Adaptability in a dynamic work environment, along with effective communication and organizational skills.
  • CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain it annually.
  • A valid driver's license and a clean driving record are recommended.
  • Fluency in a language other than English is considered an asset.
