Position Overview:
The Senior Special Projects Engineer is tasked with delivering expert engineering services that encompass inspection, condition evaluations, safety infrastructure, emergency response, investigations, monitoring, planning input, analysis, and design.

Reporting Structure:
This role reports directly to the Executive Director of Planning and Delivery, providing engineering support for planning and vertical infrastructure capital projects based on data gathered from site inspections and building condition evaluations. The position includes direct supervision of Engineers and Technologists.

Employment Conditions:

  • Must possess legal authorization to work in Canada.
  • Registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with the relevant provincial engineering association.
  • Willingness to travel within the province by various means.
  • Must hold a valid Class 5 driver's license without restrictions.
  • Ability to travel with overnight accommodations.
  • Must provide personal transportation within the province.

Qualifications:
Essential:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
  • Appropriate scope-of-practice in building construction and related systems.
  • Experience in interpreting construction plans, specifications, and contract documents, particularly in mechanical engineering systems.
  • Experience in data collection and business analysis.
  • Proven project management experience with the ability to develop technical documentation for project planning and execution.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills, including planning, assigning, monitoring, and overseeing the work of professional and technical staff.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, capable of effectively addressing media inquiries.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, especially Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety and health practices.

Desired:
  • Experience in developing Facility Condition Indexes or Building Condition Assessments.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent is advantageous.

Key Responsibilities:
The incumbent will be responsible for:
  • Overseeing the creation and execution of Facility Condition Indexes using data from inspections and assessments to prioritize capital projects effectively.
  • Managing and assigning inspection and estimation services for data collection and scope determination for capital projects.
  • Overseeing project budgets and expenditures, ensuring deliverables are met within financial authority.
  • Guiding and supervising the work of external consultants on single-discipline mechanical projects or multi-disciplinary initiatives. Developing departmental standards and specifications and contributing to training program development.
  • Presenting and defending engineering work to various audiences, developing options to resolve issues, and making recommendations to support decision-making.
