Position Overview:

The Veterinary Assistant role involves a variety of responsibilities that will adapt based on the clinic's requirements and the qualifications of the selected candidate. This position will provide support to the permanent staff and will be utilized for relief during absences.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assisting the full-time Animal Health Technologist with all aspects of anesthesia, including restraint, monitoring, and recovery.
  • Preparing patients for surgery, which includes tasks such as nail trimming, shaving, and tattooing.
  • Providing general care for patients and maintaining cleanliness.
  • Cleaning surgical instruments and preparing surgical kits.
  • Assisting the veterinarian during surgical procedures when necessary.
  • Restocking supplies in cabinets and drawers.
  • Maintaining the clinic's cleanliness, including laundry, wiping down surfaces, sweeping, mopping, and cleaning kennels.
  • Assisting with the discharge process for surgical patients.
  • Performing reception duties, including scheduling appointments, answering phone calls, and processing patient check-ins and check-outs.
  • Ordering necessary supplies.
  • Carrying out other duties as required to ensure the clinic operates smoothly.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a Veterinary Office Assistant program or relevant experience as a veterinary assistant.
  • Strong knowledge of animals, including breeds, characteristics, and common health issues.
  • Experience handling dogs and cats in a professional environment is preferred.
  • The role is physically demanding, requiring heavy lifting and the ability to maintain fitness and endurance.
  • Proficient computer skills, particularly in MS Office Suite, to effectively manage job responsibilities.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated strong customer service and telephone skills.
  • Adaptability to changing situations.
  • Capability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment.
