Principal Manager, Due Diligence & Advisory Services
Overview

The Due Diligence Group operates within the Due Diligence & Advisory Department, a key component of the Finance Division. This Group is tasked with performing comprehensive operational due diligence on external managers and essential service providers to support the investment strategies of Teachers' Investment departments.

The Principal Manager, Due Diligence will take charge of planning and executing operational due diligence assessments concerning external managers, adhering to the Board's External Manager Due Diligence Policy.

This role necessitates both domestic and international travel, including regions such as Europe and Asia.

Collaborative Environment

You will cultivate and maintain robust relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, including pension plans and investment managers.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Oversee and conduct operational due diligence on external managers and key service providers, supporting Teachers' external manager initiatives.
    • For each external manager, gain insights into their internal controls, transaction processes, fund transfer mechanisms, custody and valuation procedures, performance metrics, risk assessment activities, regulatory compliance, IT capabilities, cybersecurity measures, and business continuity plans.
  2. Provide operational risk evaluations to internal stakeholders, including the Director and MD of DDA, CFO, investment teams, and legal advisors as necessary.
    • Prepare detailed assessments that outline significant operational risks and propose potential mitigations based on evaluations of each external manager.
  3. Foster strong business relationships with internal teams and external partners to effectively support Teachers' investment objectives.
    • Ensure outstanding service by proactively addressing concerns and responding to inquiries from the Investment departments.
    • Collaborate with various internal departments to optimize resource utilization.
  4. Regularly update best practices within the Group to address emerging risks, new investment strategies, and significant developments, including reviewing and revising relevant policies and procedures as needed.
    • Engage with other pension plans, investment managers, and industry participants to enhance understanding of investment strategies, fund structures, industry trends, and operational due diligence matters.
  5. As an extension of the Group's operational due diligence responsibilities, the Principal Manager will offer value-added advisory services to both internal and external stakeholders, including but not limited to:
  6. Designing and supporting external fund operational infrastructures;
  7. Assisting in the development of investment programs;
  8. Analyzing market infrastructures;
  9. Structuring transactions (e.g., providing operational insights into governance frameworks and legal stipulations); and,
  10. Enhancing internal oversight processes to mitigate operational risks.
  11. Lead, inspire, and develop a high-performing team; provide mentorship and guidance to team members, helping them reach their full potential.
  12. Support the establishment of team performance objectives, prioritize resource allocation, oversee service quality, and ensure consistency in Group deliverables.
  13. Exemplify Teachers' values in all interactions across various organizational levels and with external partners.

The Principal Manager frequently collaborates with senior management and executives from both internal and external stakeholders. This role demands a high level of professionalism, diplomacy, and the ability to advocate for one's position effectively.

  1. Exhibit confidence and thoughtfulness in recommendations; navigate competing interests and expectations from various departments with careful consideration. This position serves as a crucial control in safeguarding the Board's interests and highlighting significant external risks that may not be apparent to Board staff and key decision-makers.
  2. Identify solutions to alleviate operational and reputational challenges, supporting partners and delivering risk assessments to investment stakeholders.
Qualifications
  • Relevant university degree(s) in Finance, Accounting, or Commerce.
  • A master's degree in finance and/or accounting, CPA, CFA, CAIA, or equivalent designations is advantageous.
  • Strong understanding of various public and private market investment strategies, public market infrastructure, and associated operational processes and systems.
  • Familiarity with deal/trade lifecycles, including execution, settlement, pricing, valuations, reconciliations, investment reporting, performance measurement, fee and NAV calculations, and risk assessment.
  • Knowledge of best practices concerning cybersecurity, technology infrastructure, and business continuity planning.
  • Awareness of the regulatory landscape for investment managers operating in major jurisdictions.
  • Extensive professional experience (8+ years) in a relevant field.
  • Direct experience in the alternative investment sector (hedge funds, private equity, venture capital, private credit) is beneficial (8+ years).
  • Experience in investment operations, middle office, and/or fund accounting in a managerial capacity is a plus (8+ years).
  • Proven track record in leadership and team management.
  • Experience in assessing and enhancing internal control processes.
  • Proficient in preparing formal documentation and presentations, as well as communicating effectively with senior management.
  • Background in change management, strategic planning, and continuous improvement initiatives.
