Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Laboratory Technologist to join our team at William Osler Health System. As a key member of our clinical laboratory team, you will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy and reliability of laboratory results, performing equipment maintenance and calibration, and monitoring quality control results.

Key Responsibilities
  • Result Verification: Verify laboratory results for accuracy and investigate unexpected abnormal and/or spurious results according to laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform operation, maintenance, and calibration of laboratory analyzers and equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • Quality Control: Monitor quality control results and respond appropriately to discordant results to ensure accurate and reliable laboratory results.
  • Specimen Management: Ensure specimen collection, integrity, transport, and storage are appropriate for sample processing and analysis.
  • Discordant Findings: Refer discordant findings to appropriate personnel for further follow-up to ensure accurate and reliable laboratory results.
  • Bone Marrow Collections: Assist at bone marrow collections, check specimen for acceptability, and process in-house and send-out test requests.
  • Blood Product Management: Monitor temperature and expiry dates of blood and blood component products to ensure products are acceptable for transfusion and discard outdated or compromised products as required.
  • Operating Room Support: Check operating room list to ensure blood products are available for required surgeries and issue blood and blood component products as needed.
  • Quality Management: Actively participate in the Laboratory quality management system and process improvements to ensure accurate and reliable laboratory results.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Perform other procedures and duties as assigned to support the clinical laboratory team.
Requirements
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited medical laboratory technology program or equivalent education (CSMLS).
  • Registration: Must be registered and in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario.
  • Experience: Minimum two years recent chemistry, hematology, and transfusion medicine experience in a hospital laboratory setting is preferred or must demonstrate successful completion of all relevant education/refresher courses within the past two years.
  • Skills: Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and maintain a high level of productivity, competence, and professionalism. Able to evaluate and analyze information to facilitate continuous improvement of the Laboratory process in the interest of quality patient care.
  • Technical Skills: Strong multi-tasking, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Excellent organizational and communication skills. Proven ability to be a team player; strong interpersonal skills. Knowledge of Meditech, Paradigm, and other Microsoft Office computer systems.
  • Personal Qualities: Excellent attendance, punctuality, and work ethic. Demonstrated Osler's Values of Respect, Excellence, Service, Compassion, Innovation, and Collaboration.
