Zurich Canada is actively searching for an Energy Casualty Underwriting Specialist to assess and underwrite risks associated with the mining, oil & gas exploration and production, downstream, petrochemical, and power generation industries.
Reporting to the Head of Energy Canada, Property & Casualty, you will be part of a dedicated team focused on evaluating risks in these sectors. We specialize in underwriting Canadian businesses and offer coverage for both domestic and international exposures. Our team prides itself on being technical experts, committed to delivering innovative solutions and exceptional service to our clients. You will collaborate with experienced underwriters and engineers, managing both renewal and new business in accordance with The Zurich Way of Underwriting Framework.

Key Responsibilities
• Underwrite and evaluate new and renewal business using The Zurich Way of Underwriting framework, adhering to delegated authority levels for complex assignments.
• Provide mentorship to junior associates as needed.
• Cultivate and maintain relationships with distributors (agents & brokers) to support business retention and growth, addressing their insurance needs with tailored solutions.
• Actively pursue renewal and new account opportunities.
• Support the sales culture by serving as a key contact for brokers and clients.
• Conduct thorough opportunity assessments with key distributors to identify growth prospects.
• Qualify accounts to align with the organization's risk appetite while balancing sound business opportunities.
• Conduct broker/customer visits with a well-prepared agenda.
• Negotiate terms and conditions and finalize agreements.
• Promote cross-selling of additional business lines to enhance account value.
• Participate in Sales Team meetings relevant to assigned brokers and/or territories.
• Engage proactively in the target account process, managing a list of qualified opportunities well in advance of effective dates.
• Maintain accurate records of broker/client interactions and account status within specified timelines.
• Serve as the primary Zurich contact for designated target accounts.
• Accurately calculate target pricing using appropriate underwriting tools.
• Assess exposures and analyze risks.
• Provide quotes and establish coverage, negotiating terms and conditions.
• Manage account servicing, including handling declinations and cancellations.
• Participate in marketing presentations for assigned agents/brokers.
• Offer technical guidance to assist clients in resolving issues or enhancing their business operations.
• Foster positive customer relationships through regular engagement.
• Anticipate client needs and monitor industry trends to recommend necessary adjustments.
• Analyze requirements and propose alternatives for improving processes, customer service, or product offerings.
Qualifications - What You Bring
• High School Diploma or Equivalent with a minimum of 5 years of experience in Underwriting or Market Facing roles.
OR
• High School Diploma or Equivalent with at least 10 years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support roles.
OR
• Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and a minimum of 3 years of experience in Underwriting or Market Facing roles.
OR
• Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and at least 8 years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support roles.
AND
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Experience in a collaborative team environment.
Preferred:
• Bachelor’s Degree.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
