We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Science Assistant to join our team at School District #73 (Kamloops-Thompson). The successful candidate will provide laboratory support and assistance to our science department, ensuring a safe and effective learning environment for our students.
Key Responsibilities- Preparation and Maintenance: Safely prepare all chemicals, equipment, and experiments required for labs, and maintain laboratory equipment in safe working order.
- Setup and Organization: Set up laboratories in preparation for experiments, and maintain cleanliness of laboratories, prep areas, and equipment.
- Inventory Management: Maintain inventory of specimens for dissection, prepare specimens for student use, and ensure inventory control for chemical and biological supplies and equipment.
- Chemical Management: Promote compliance with Provincial Science Safety Manual and district safety policies, identify chemicals not provincially approved, and participate in approval process.
- Spill Response and Cleanup: Assess spills to determine level of response required, clean-up technique, and use of personal protection and exposure controls, and ensure safe chemical disposal.
- Student Support: Assist students in learning situations, and provide support to teachers and staff as needed.
- Education: Grade 12 supplemented with a minimum of 1 year post-secondary courses in sciences.
- Experience: One year proven previous work experience in area employed, with WHMIS certification.
- Skills: Ability to communicate and maintain effective working relationships with students, teachers, and staff, ability to organize and prioritize workload with limited supervision, and working knowledge of computers, spreadsheets, office procedures, and office equipment.
