The Role:

The Efficiency Specialist position within the Affordable Multifamily Housing Team involves providing both technical and administrative support. This role primarily focuses on assisting program applicants throughout their journey. The Efficiency Specialist will review project documentation, perform data entry, and conduct technical evaluations of energy models to help clients identify optimal energy-saving strategies. Additional responsibilities include coordinating energy audits, generating reports for customers and internal use, conducting site visits for quality assurance, supporting pilot initiatives, and assisting fellow team members in the Affordable Multifamily Housing sector. A candidate with a solid understanding of building science principles in multi-unit residential settings is highly desirable.

  • Analyze and review industry-standard energy models (e.g., CanQuest/eQuest, H2K, RETScreen, etc.).
  • Possess a working knowledge of the National Building Code (NBC) and National Energy Code for Buildings (NECB) as they relate to energy models.
  • Assist in developing and refining program materials and processes for pilot initiatives.
  • Ensure new participants fully understand the commitments and expectations of the program.
  • Engage with participants and conduct follow-ups.
  • Support project agreement development and administration, ensuring compliance with established regulations.
  • Guarantee the quality and accuracy of technical work within specialized areas and within a team context.
  • Conduct measurement and verification of energy-saving measures throughout each project's lifecycle.
  • Implement evaluator and verifier recommendations for the program.

What Will Help You Succeed?

  • A solid understanding of building science principles.
  • A bachelor's degree or diploma in Engineering Technology or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Relevant certifications, such as Certified Energy Managers or Certified Measurement and Verification professionals, are advantageous.
  • Proficiency in all MS Office applications (including Teams).
  • Familiarity with whole building energy modeling software (H2K, eQuest, HAP, and/or IES VE) is a plus.
  • A willingness to embrace new opportunities and challenges, with a commitment to ongoing personal and professional development.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • The ability to prioritize tasks and work independently or collaboratively.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to travel within Nova Scotia.

In the first month, you can expect to:

  • Deepen your understanding of the team, energy auditing partners, and departmental initiatives.
  • Become acquainted with the processes for active projects.
  • Begin conducting project reviews with support from the Affordable Multifamily Housing team.
  • Start tracking projects and continue self-directed learning to enhance your knowledge of energy modeling best practices and energy efficiency measures in retrofit projects.
  • Learn about and assist with the Affordable Rental Construction pilot as needed.

In the first three months, you can expect to:

  • Manage projects, including technical reviews of energy model submissions.
  • Participate in the program evaluation process.
  • Contribute to team and departmental initiatives.
  • Collaborate with your manager to establish individual learning and development goals.
