Job Summary

The Modeling Lead reports to the Modeling Supervisor and is responsible for creating both hard surface and organic models. The Lead will also be tasked with guiding new artists through studio artistic and technical standards and practices.

Responsibilities

  • Develop production-ready, artistically appealing, and technically sound 3D models based on project requirements, while balancing the needs of all downstream departments.
  • Sculpt character maquettes as needed.
  • Revise and/or clean up models provided by clients.
  • Assist the Supervisor with reviewing artist work for technical and artistic standards.
  • Guide new hires in the use of pipeline tools and best practices.
  • Create guides and documentation to teach new tools or workflows to other artists.
  • Identify any issues/problems and collaborate with the Supervisor to develop corrective action plans.
  • Actively recognize outstanding performance from artists.
  • Provide constructive feedback on models, both artistically and technically.
  • Troubleshoot existing problems.
  • Work with the Supervisor to investigate new tools and workflows that can enhance existing practices.

Qualifications

  • A degree/diploma in fine arts, animation, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Feature Film, Commercial, and/or Video Game production.
  • Knowledge of current industry production processes.
  • Ability to communicate creative and technical thoughts and ideas effectively.
  • Ability to make creative/artistic/aesthetic judgment calls.
  • Prior experience in supervising or training is an asset.
  • Proficiency with Maya and Zbrush.
  • Good knowledge of Unreal Engine or comparable game engines is beneficial.
  • Mastery of poly and sub-D modeling in Maya, Modo, or other comparable high-end software.
  • Understanding of the needs of facial rigging, including the creation of facial blendshape sets and expressions.
  • Understanding of surfacing requirements, including the ability to create UV sets.
  • Strong aesthetic sense: demonstrates the ability to make creative and aesthetic judgment calls.
