We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Law Clerk to join our team at Linds & Associates. As a key member of our Estates Litigation department, you will play a critical role in supporting our lawyers and clients in complex estate litigation matters.
Key Responsibilities- Evaluate files to review case facts, determine appropriate processes, and identify key issues to plan the steps necessary for the conduct of the file.
- Draft pleadings, applications, affidavits, correspondence, and other documents as needed throughout the conduct of the file, in accordance with legislation and/or governing regulations.
- Liaise with clients to obtain information, ensure the client is current with the status of their file, and answer queries/concerns within the assigned authority.
- Assist with matters concerning estate administration, guardianships, will challenges, and interpretations, power of attorney issues, and disputes.
- Undertake mentorship and guidance of junior staff within the department.
- Research and analyze various issues, processes, case law, codes, legislation, and initiate follow-up actions as necessary.
- Communicate directly with service providers, judicial/tribunal officials, and bank/financial institution officers in connection with the client's file.
- Prepare reports as needed.
- Completion of an accredited Law Clerk program and years of experience working in estate litigation.
- Ability to communicate effectively with other members and take care of clients' needs in a professional and courteous manner.
- Ability to perform legal research, identify legal issues, and analyze legal documents for accuracy.
- Developing aptitude to coach and mentor junior law clerks.
- Produce high-quality and quantity of work product, often under tight timelines.
- Able to handle stress in a business-like manner and redefine priorities when necessary.
- Strong time management and organizational skills.
- Excellent understanding of the Rules of Civil Procedure.
- Self-starter, able to work in a remote environment with limited supervision.
- Confident and dependable with strong initiative and the ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented atmosphere.
- Exceptional technical skills, including experience in MS Office Suite, Expert Time, iManage, and WindUp.
- Working knowledge of Relativity or another document management software an asset.
- Basic understanding of other relevant areas of law, including real estate, commercial law, and tax an asset.
- Certificate in Estate and Trust Administration (CETA) an asset.
