Position Overview:

The Forest Technician plays a vital role in the stewardship of forested areas, contributing to the sustainable management of both private and public lands. This position involves a variety of responsibilities aimed at enhancing forest health and ensuring compliance with conservation regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the execution of forest conservation strategies, including the collection of data, assessment of forest conditions, documentation, and mapping activities.
  • Oversee contracts related to tree planting initiatives, ensuring adherence to guidelines and monitoring contractor performance.
  • Coordinate a maintenance program for young trees, which encompasses watering, mulching, and pruning efforts on designated lands.
  • Assist in maintaining Geographic Information System (GIS) services for operational purposes.
  • Gather data pertinent to the enforcement of forest conservation regulations.
  • Follow established administrative and enforcement policies under direct supervision, applying recognized practices in forest mensuration and management.
  • Contribute to the delivery of forestry extension services to various community groups.
  • Operate and maintain forestry-related equipment, vehicles, and tools.
  • Engage with the public in a professional manner while performing duties.
  • Ensure accurate documentation and data compilation in accordance with established protocols.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of post-secondary education in forestry, urban forestry, arboriculture, or a related environmental science field.
  • One to two years of relevant experience in forestry, arboriculture, urban forestry, or environmental consulting, or a combination of education and experience.
  • Familiarity with silvicultural practices, particularly in managing hardwood forests and red pine plantations.
  • Practical experience in data collection using GPS technology.
  • Experience with GIS applications is considered an asset.
  • Membership in the International Society of Arboriculture is a plus.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Proficient in using forestry and urban forestry tools and equipment.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment.
  • Strong physical dexterity and capability to perform manual tasks.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to maintain positive relationships with the public.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and experience operating vehicles and trailers.
  • Understanding of natural resource management practices and professional standards.
  • Competence in standard office software and department-specific applications.
  • Awareness of safe work practices relevant to job responsibilities and knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations.
