The Lightspeed System Engineering team is tasked with defining the performance requirements for all RF components within the satellite communication ecosystem. As a Senior RF Systems Engineer, your role will involve simulating and modeling both terrestrial and in-orbit communication systems for Lightspeed, while also contributing to the architectural definition.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Simulate and model communication systems
  • Collaborate with system architects, RF engineers, antenna engineers, User Terminal, and Landing Station engineers to delineate functions between hardware and software domains
  • Formulate strategies for modeling RF link performance, accounting for impairments across various system elements
  • Derive top-level specifications for RF links and RF/antenna subsystems
  • Characterize and analyze system performance, developing and maintaining performance budgets
  • Provide technical support to regulatory, coordination, and market access teams

Education & Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related engineering discipline; a Master's degree or PhD in electrical engineering with a focus on RF/microwave circuits or communication theory is preferred
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in RF communication systems
  • Familiarity with digital communication systems, spread spectrum, single and multi-carrier techniques, and modulation types such as PSK, APSK, QAM
  • Specific experience with modulation standards like DVB-S2X and DVB-RCS2, as well as Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM) methods
  • Proficient in MATLAB or similar tools for modeling and analyzing RF communication systems

Specialized Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in analyzing and simulating communication systems
  • Comprehensive understanding of RF passive and active components
  • Solid grasp of active antenna beamforming technologies, including digital beamforming and rapid beam hopping
  • Experience in characterizing radio performance at microwave frequencies, including the impact of rain fade on communication links
  • Knowledge of RF transceiver architectures and digital communication theory
