Qualifications and Skills
Educational Requirements
Completion of Year 2 or equivalent of a recognized nursing education program, along with ongoing enrollment in a BC College of Nurses and Midwives accredited program. Active student membership with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives is required.
Skills and Competencies
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge and capability to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) as per service area requirements.
- Effective organizational skills to manage workload and set priorities.
- Ability to interact positively with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders, including colleagues, healthcare professionals, patients, and their families.
- Physical capability to fulfill the responsibilities of the role.
Responsibilities
The Student Nurse will assess, document, and communicate the health status of assigned patients, residents, or clients, which includes:
- Gathering patient data from medical records, observing patient conditions, and conducting comprehensive assessments (physical, mental, emotional, and social).
- Collaborating with nursing teams, multidisciplinary teams, community partners, and families to ensure comprehensive care.
- Documenting health care statuses accurately.
- Reporting any changes in patient status to appropriate personnel as necessary.
The role involves collaboration with nursing and multidisciplinary teams to assist in the development and adjustment of patient care plans, which includes:
- Supporting patients in establishing health-promoting relationships.
- Aiding in the formulation of short and long-term health goals.
- Identifying and prioritizing suitable nursing actions, including preventative and therapeutic care.
- Contributing to discharge planning processes.
The Student Nurse will provide nursing care through various functions, such as administering medications, managing IV solutions, performing catheterizations, and conducting wound care. They will also prepare patients for surgical procedures and other interventions, while identifying and reporting any urgent situations.
Evaluating patient responses to care is essential, as is modifying interventions based on care plan assessments. Participation in multidisciplinary evaluations of patient care, including readiness for discharge, is also expected.
The Student Nurse will engage in quality improvement initiatives and assist in data collection as required.
Vaccination Requirement
As mandated by current Public Health Orders, all employees at Providence Health Care must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination status will be necessary.
