Key Responsibilities

  1. Deliver consistent, high-quality, and compassionate care to all laboratory animals.
  2. Conduct daily husbandry, handling, restraint, and health monitoring of small animal species, ensuring compliance with Canadian Council of Animal Care guidelines.
  3. Assist in minor surgical procedures and sample collection under the guidance of the Operations Manager or Veterinarian.
  4. Manage the receipt and packaging of live animal shipments.
  5. Handle the packaging and processing of biological and hazardous materials.
  6. Maintain cleanliness and organization in the cage wash area.
  7. Ensure the upkeep and sanitation of cages, equipment, and surgical facilities.
  8. Adhere to all safety protocols and standard operating procedures.
  9. Support research staff with animal care techniques and procedures.
  10. Stay current with required training and certifications.
  11. Maintain confidentiality regarding research projects and personnel.
  12. Engage in ongoing professional development and education.
  13. Perform additional related tasks as needed.

Qualifications

High school diploma with additional training in a relevant field and a minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or completion of a technical program. A B.Sc. in an animal-related field or AHT diploma is preferred. Registration as a CALAS Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT) is advantageous. Experience with small animals in a research context is also preferred.
