Your Opportunity: Under the guidance of the Manager, Infrastructure, the Connectivity Technician plays a crucial role in the installation and maintenance of classroom technology. This includes managing projectors, screens, interactive whiteboards, video conferencing systems, and both data and voice networks. Responsibilities involve running, pulling, terminating, and splicing cables, as well as installing telecommunications devices, routers, switches, and cable management systems. The role also encompasses supporting audio-visual and voice system software, providing training and guidance on AV and telecom technologies to other IT and media personnel. The Connectivity Technician is proactive in identifying opportunities to enhance value and address the needs of College stakeholders while staying informed on best practices and industry developments through continuous education and technical literature.

Functions and Duties:

  1. Plans network installations by analyzing customer requests, technical specifications, and relevant documentation.
  2. Responsible for the physical setup of IT hardware, including mounting televisions, projectors, audio systems, and network devices.
  3. Installs and maintains digital communication networks, collaborating with internal service providers as needed.
  4. Handles jack installations, cross connections, and patch panels for telecom and AV setups.
  5. Diagnoses circuit issues and implements solutions to resolve them.
  6. Maintains comprehensive documentation to ensure accurate records and proper labeling of equipment.
  7. Oversees inventory management of spare parts and orders necessary supplies and tools.
  8. Evaluates installation sites and creates installation diagrams for projects and renovations.
  9. Monitors contractor work to ensure compliance with cabling standards.
  10. Contributes to the development of policies and procedures regarding network and telephone equipment.
  11. Assists in managing voice systems accounts.
  12. Adheres to all safety regulations.
  13. Stays current with industry trends and best practices through ongoing education and review of technical publications.
  14. Performs additional related duties as necessary.

Education and Experience: Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent, along with a two-year post-secondary program in a relevant field. A minimum of two years of related experience is required.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Familiarity with network design is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of voice systems.
  • Ability to frequently lift and transport equipment weighing up to 20 kg, and occasionally more.
  • Willingness to work in confined spaces when necessary.
  • Effective prioritization and organization of tasks.
  • Capability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication and customer interaction skills.
  • Flexibility to work varied hours, including evenings and weekends.
