The Role:

The Quality Assurance Supervisor at Maple Leaf Foods is tasked with overseeing the successful implementation of food safety initiatives through comprehensive task evaluations, verification processes, and monitoring activities, along with program assessments and auditing functions. The individual will facilitate and motivate cross-functional teams during audit execution and the formulation of corrective action strategies for any regulatory and internal compliance discrepancies.

A Glimpse into Daily Responsibilities:
  • Manage a team of Quality Assurance Technicians, ensuring that tasks are executed consistently, efficiently, and align with business objectives.
  • Oversee Quality and Food Safety protocols and programs.
  • Strategize QA staffing needs based on production demands and staffing levels.
  • Conduct training sessions (both individual and group), covering equipment usage, food safety standards, WHMIS, and SDS.
  • Engage in the development, updating, and implementation of cross-functional Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Provide updates and maintenance for HACCP and Food Safety Quality Programs, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements for all stakeholders.
  • Prepare for third-party audits (including CVS, HACCP, BRC, FSQMS) and coach cross-functional managers throughout the audit process.
  • Assist in follow-up investigations and issue corrective actions as necessary based on any deviations identified in plant processes or arising from customer and consumer feedback.
  • Support the environmental monitoring program for all relevant equipment and facility areas, ensuring results are accurately recorded in the Environmental Monitoring System (EMS).
  • Analyze sanitation and environmental data to identify root causes of deficiencies and provide feedback to sanitation and operations teams for performance enhancement.
  • Regularly audit and report non-compliance issues, implementing corrective measures to ensure adherence to all food safety quality standards.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and employee training at all levels.
  • Offer technical guidance to Manufacturing Operations regarding product quality, food safety, and best manufacturing practices.
  • Plan, engage, communicate, and direct Quality Assurance/Food Safety activities across various programs, including Sanitation, Employee Relations, and Health and Safety.
  • Cultivate a positive work environment through effective interpersonal skills, team building, open communication, and constructive performance management.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Maintenance, Sanitation, and other functional areas to support and execute the company's Food Safety programs.
  • Promote and uphold the company's health and safety initiatives, ensuring a safe workplace and compliance with relevant health and safety regulations.
  • Flexibility to move between shifts and departments as needed for support.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education, preferably a B.Sc. in Chemistry or Microbiology.
  • A minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience in FSQA within a food manufacturing context, ideally in a unionized environment.
  • Familiarity with food chemistry, microbiology, allergen management, auditing, GFSI/BRC standards, sanitary design, and HACCP principles.
  • Proven ability to independently manage and develop a team.
  • Strong track record of building partnerships across multiple functional areas to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Knowledge of industry-specific quality systems and inspection protocols.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities.
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on results.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficient in English (reading, writing, and speaking).
  • Competent in MS Office applications (Excel and Word).
