Duties and Responsibilities:

The Machine Shop Technician provides technical support and workshop services for the department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (MAE). Reporting to the MAE Machine Shop Supervisor, the technician provides specialized technical assistance and advice to students, faculty, staff, and external clients. The technician operates and maintains the department's direct energy deposition (DED) metal printer, computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines using CAD/CAM software, provides conventional machine shop services, welding, and metal fabrication services. The technician supports students, faculty, and staff in the development, design, fabrication, repair, and installation of teaching and research equipment. Independently supports and monitors machine shop activity and provides instructional guidance regarding the above equipment to students, faculty, and other users of the machine shop equipment.

The technician assists in the selection, installation, and performs maintenance on the above equipment as well as exercises stock keeping; tool control program, material stock, consumable machine parts.

Qualifications:

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:

  • Basic understanding of administrative techniques and procedures
  • Ability to quickly learn the intricacies of Carleton University procedures and regulations, as well as any government legislation which may apply to items or practices encountered on the job
  • Familiarity with machine shop hand tools, their nomenclature and use, supplies commonly used in machine shops, the use of personal computers and the software necessary to carry on the procedures specified
  • Ability to operate a forklift as well as other heavy-duty equipment
  • Technical proficiency in mechanical systems technology, machine shop practices, NC machining and programming, 3D printing approaches in the field of mechanical and aerospace
  • Ability to read and understand drawings and blueprints and to translate this information into computer machining codes for operation of CNC machine tools
  • Ability to design jigs and fixtures required to produce parts
  • Mechanical knowledge sufficient to help create final designs, CAD and conventional, from conceptual or partial design data
  • Basic knowledge of Chemistry and chemical nomenclature, sufficient to allow the incumbent to understand WHMIS regulations and other regulations concerning hazardous materials
Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:

  • Three (3) year manufacturing technology and/or machining technology program from a recognized institute of technology or an accredited equivalent
  • Five years pertinent machine-shop or prototyping experience, preferably with some experience at a post-secondary institution
