Position Overview:

The Lead Compositing Artist will undertake intricate digital image integration tasks while providing support to the 2D artists within their project group. This role involves addressing inquiries, offering direction, and assisting in problem resolution in a constructive and positive manner.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Execute compositing on a range of shots from simple to complex at various production stages, including pre-compositions, lineups, 2D tracking, effects, keying, integration, and color grading;
  • Manage timelines effectively and conduct online sessions with clients;
  • Address visual, artistic, and technical challenges when feasible or relay information to the relevant department (generalists, motion design, etc.);
  • Ensure the final composition of visual effects shots maintains consistency;
  • Balance the creative and technical elements of each shot;
  • Merge 2D and 3D components to create photorealistic images that align with Rodeo's high standards;
  • Collaborate closely with the VFX Supervisor and Production to devise creative and technical solutions that fulfill project requirements and timelines;
  • Contribute to the development of tools for their specialty, testing these tools prior to integration, and ensuring comprehensive documentation;
  • Oversee a team of artists on a project, demonstrating expert skills in the specialty and a positive, solution-oriented approach;
  • In partnership with production, plan and delegate suitable tasks to team members, considering their skills, experience, and project workflow;
  • Provide constructive feedback on artists' work to ensure it meets quality benchmarks and aligns with the client's artistic vision;
  • Maintain open communication with the Production Team and Head of Creative Operations regarding workload issues, assisting in finding alternative tasks and contributing to downtime strategies (training, R&D pipeline tools, etc.);
  • Mentor team members through training and knowledge sharing, participating in the creation of training materials or conducting group training sessions;
  • Engage in mid & post-mortem reviews, as well as annual evaluations of artists by providing feedback to the Head of Creative Operations;
  • Keep Production and the project team updated on work status, issues requiring resolution, implications of encountered problems, and recommend potential solutions;
  • Ensure deadlines are adhered to, promptly notifying the project team of any anticipated delays, whether by themselves or a team member;
  • Stay informed about advancements in their specialty and remain vigilant for the latest technological developments in methods and practices.
Qualifications:
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience as a Compositing Artist in the post-production or VFX sector;
  • Extensive knowledge of Flame software;
  • Familiarity with Nuke;
  • Understanding of Shotgrid;
  • Proficient in photographic techniques, including knowledge of color, lighting (reflection, refraction, shadows), perspective, and composition;
  • Strong prioritization skills and respect for deadlines;
  • Ability to maintain composure under pressure and serve as a positive role model and mentor;
  • Candidate must be located in the Montreal area.
