About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Designer to join our team at Smith + Andersen. As a Mechanical Designer, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality building services design projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare detailed drawings and calculations to deliver projects on time and within budget.
  • Design building systems in accordance with municipal and provincial building codes and standards.
  • Collaborate with structural, architectural, and electrical teams to ensure seamless integration of mechanical systems.
  • Develop layouts and designs for mechanical building systems, including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, fire protection systems, and plumbing and drainage systems.
  • Prepare project-specific details and building sections to clarify project scope and assist with interference coordination.
  • Conduct calculations to size ductwork, gas, HVAC, piping, plumbing, and drainage systems, and incorporate calculations into technical drawings.
  • Liaise with project consultants, coordinate design requirements, and supervise drawings between disciplines.
  • Design mechanical building systems directly in Revit, adhering to company BIM standards.
  • Work with clash/coordination reports, assist with model audits, and ensure the overall health of the model.
  • Liaise with suppliers and manufacturers for design support, equipment, and component selection.
  • Assist in construction administration by reviewing equipment shop drawings and conducting site visits, site reviews, and preparing change notices and site instructions.
Requirements
  • Two or more years of direct industry experience in mechanical building services.
  • Diploma or degree from a mechanical building services or engineering program.
  • Knowledge and experience working with Autodesk Revit, with exposure to mechanical layouts and systems.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD MEP.
  • Knowledge of all Microsoft Office suites, specifically Word and Excel.
  • Working knowledge of various mechanical systems, including heating, air conditioning, plumbing systems, etc.
  • Familiarity with structural, architectural, and electrical models to appreciate space limitations and interferences.
  • Familiarity with municipal and provincial codes and authorities.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work in a fast-paced environment driven by project deadlines.
  • Highly innovative and motivated with an attention to detail.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, able to communicate effectively with internal and external clients.
  • Able to work independently and contribute to the team.
