We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Laboratory Technologist I to join our team in the Core Laboratory at Provincial Laboratory Medicine Services (PLMS). As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for performing laboratory procedures, analyzing results, and communicating test results to healthcare teams.
Key Responsibilities- Obtain laboratory samples from patients and perform laboratory procedures according to established policies.
- Analyze results and communicate test results to healthcare teams through various methods.
- Prepare solutions, reagents, standards, and controls for use in analysis, adhering to Standard Operating Procedures.
- Respond to requests and inquiries for test results, following standard operating procedures.
- Communicate test results to designated members of healthcare teams, using methods such as printing and distributing lab results.
- Perform routine instrument maintenance, including setup, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory instruments.
- Identify and report malfunctions in equipment, adhering to Diagnostic Accreditation Program (DAP) practices.
- Assist in evaluating technical procedures and provide input in developing and maintaining policy procedures for assigned work areas.
- Participate in departmental training and orientation programs, demonstrating established laboratory procedures to new employees and students.
- Assist with information management, such as gathering information, completing analysis, and recording information.
- Maintain inventory of supplies, identifying depleting stock, notifying applicable personnel, and completing requisitions and forwarding for approval and ordering.
- Maintain a clean and safe work area, adhering to established policies and procedures.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Certification with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).
- One year recent related experience in the designated discipline within the last six years, and/or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Demonstrated recent working knowledge of the assigned section or sections.
- Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory procedures and technical competence to perform tests used in the assigned section of the laboratory, including quality control and safety.
- Basic awareness of research process.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize workload.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure in a constantly changing environment.
- Basic knowledge of other healthcare disciplines and their role in client care using point-of-care instrumentation.
- Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment and software, including techniques appropriate to the designated area of the laboratory.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
- Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada, as per TRC and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.
- Knowledge of social, economic, political, and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism, and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments.
