Elementary School Counsellor

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Elementary School Counsellor to join our team at School District #63 (Saanich). The successful candidate will provide comprehensive counselling services to students in grades K-5, promoting their intellectual, human, social, and career development.

• Provide individual and group counselling services to students, addressing their social, emotional, and behavioural needs.
• Collaborate with classroom teachers to understand and plan for the social, emotional, and behavioural needs of students.
• Develop and implement proactive, comprehensive counselling programs to promote student well-being.
• Act as a resource person for teaching staff, providing guidance and support on student-related matters.
• Participate in Critical Response Teams to address student crises and provide support to students and staff.
• Develop and maintain relationships with community resources and referral processes to support student needs.
• Work effectively as a member of a collaborative team to promote student success.

• Bachelor of Education (Elementary) or equivalent.
• Master's Degree in Counselling or Psychology or a related discipline with a focus on counselling.
• Two years of successful classroom experience at the elementary level.
• Two years of successful school counselling experience at the elementary level, including the provision of counselling, consultation, coordination, and education services.
• Current practical experience dealing with adolescents exhibiting behavioural and/or emotional problems.
• Demonstrated successful experience in the classroom and in a school-counselling position.

• Ability to support classroom teachers in understanding and planning for the social, emotional, and behavioural needs of students.
• Strong communication skills with students, parents, and colleagues, and ability in group process techniques.
• Ability and willingness to act as a resource person for teaching staff.
• Demonstrated interest and a strong commitment to the emotional and social development of adolescents.
• Demonstrated aptitude for counselling and/or professional counselling experience.
• Experience working in a proactive, comprehensive counselling model.
• Threat Assessment Level 2 training.
• Knowledge and understanding of the role a counsellor plays on a Critical Response Team.
• Familiarity with community resources and referral processes.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a collaborative team.
