ROLE SUMMARY

The Project Superintendent plays a crucial role in the planning, scheduling, and execution of construction activities. This position ensures that all projects adhere to safety protocols, contractual obligations, budget constraints, and the specific needs of the customer.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Safety Management

  • Possess comprehensive knowledge of WorkSafeBC Regulations.
  • Prepare and submit the Notice of Project.
  • Engage in Pre-Job Hazard Assessments and First Aid Assessments in collaboration with the Safety Department.
  • Contribute to the development of safety procedures for specific tasks.
  • Conduct monthly safety inspections.
  • Review and validate safety reports, including inspections and daily work plans.
  • Identify potential hazards and communicate them effectively to foremen and crews.
  • Ensure compliance with safety procedures as per the Prime Contractor and BA OH&S manual.
  • Facilitate project orientation for all workers and subcontractors.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety at work sites.
  • Thoroughly investigate all incidents, accidents, and near misses.
  • Oversee the maintenance and cleanliness of vehicles and equipment.

Project Management Duties

  • Review contract documents, scope of work, drawings, and specifications prior to project initiation.
  • Collaborate with estimators and project managers to review project bids and budgets.
  • Participate in bid handover and pre-construction meetings.
  • Provide necessary information to foremen, including work orders and schedules.
  • Optimize resource allocation in collaboration with the Construction Manager.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors and material suppliers for project needs.
  • Ensure that all necessary permits are obtained.
  • Direct and oversee construction operations and methodologies.
  • Implement and monitor various management plans, including Safety, Traffic, Quality, and Environmental Management Plans.
  • Maintain open communication with clients and document all interactions.
  • Participate in weekly project meetings to review progress and budget.
  • Ensure timely billing and invoice accuracy.

Planning and Coordination

  • Communicate project schedules to foremen and subcontractors.
  • Provide daily guidance to site foremen.
  • Organize necessary resources for the work site.
  • Prepare and maintain a 3-week look-ahead schedule.
  • Monitor progress to ensure deadlines are met.

Quality Assurance

  • Ensure adherence to the quality control plan.
  • Schedule quality control testing as required.
  • Address deficiencies promptly and report them through the NCR process.

Training and Development

  • Lead and mentor site foremen and crew members.
  • Ensure all workers receive proper training for their tasks.
  • Conduct bi-annual performance appraisals for direct reports.

Equipment Oversight

  • Coordinate equipment needs with the Construction Manager.
  • Communicate any equipment issues to the relevant department.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Review and validate daily reports and extra work orders.
  • Integrate foreman paperwork and timesheets promptly.
  • Maintain a diary of daily activities and site issues.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • Strong knowledge of road construction specifications and activities.
  • Understanding of contract documents.
  • Self-motivated with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills.
  • Organized and capable of managing multiple tasks.
  • Ability to interpret site plans and specifications.
  • Proficient in relevant software applications.

Desirable

  • Completion of relevant courses in Public Works or Construction Management.
  • Civil Engineering qualifications.
  • Registered with ASTTBC.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The effectiveness of the Superintendent in this role is pivotal to the success and profitability of BA Blacktop. This position requires daily interaction with various departments, serving as the key link between field operations and corporate divisions.
