Counsellor - Indigenous Education Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Counsellor to join our team at the First Nation School Board - Yukon. As a Counsellor, you will play a vital role in supporting the educational and emotional well-being of our students.
Key Responsibilities- Provide individual and group counselling services to students, focusing on social-emotional learning, behaviour management, and crisis intervention.
- Develop and implement culturally responsive educational programs that promote Indigenous knowledge, language, and values.
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and community members to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
- Assess and respond to student needs, working closely with parents and caregivers to develop and implement Student Learning Plans.
- Stay up-to-date with best practices in Indigenous education, mental health, and wellness, and incorporate this knowledge into your practice.
- Bachelor of Education or equivalent, with additional post-secondary coursework in related fields such as counselling.
- Teaching experience at various grade levels across K-12, with a focus on health and wellness curriculum programming and delivery.
- Experience assessing and responding to student needs in social-emotional domains, behaviour management, threat assessment, and crisis intervention.
- Training in areas such as suicide prevention, mental health first aid, restorative practices, threat assessment, and crisis intervention.
- Experience working as a member of a school-based team and understanding of differentiated learning pedagogies.
- Understanding of and experience working with Indigenous learners in a culturally diverse community.
- Ability to work collaboratively and maintain authentic relationships with Indigenous community members, families, and students.
- Eagerness to learn about and integrate Indigenous culture and worldview into educational programming.
- Keenness to live and work as an active member of the community, promoting greater community involvement in school-based activities.
- Strong classroom management, planning, and organizational skills, with the ability to motivate learners.
- Solid understanding of inclusive education philosophy, excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaborative skills.
