About the Role

The Facilities Maintenance Technician reports to the General Manager, Maintenance Manager, or designated supervisor and is responsible for the daily maintenance operations that support the effective functioning of the community. This role is crucial in ensuring the safety and security of all individuals, including residents, staff, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Routine Maintenance, Repairs, and Enhancements:

1. Conducts inspections of all equipment, documenting operational conditions daily, diagnosing issues, and recommending necessary replacements or upgrades to management.

2. Monitors alarm, call, and security systems, maintaining daily logs.

3. Organizes and oversees service work in the absence of the Maintenance Manager.

4. Performs general repairs to electrical, plumbing, and other building systems, consistent with the skills of an experienced maintenance professional.

5. Remains available for emergency call-ins.

6. Maintains a schedule for painting and touch-ups.

Environmental Management:

1. Implements snow removal and de-icing protocols, either directly or through contracted services as directed.

2. Supports pest control initiatives.

3. Ensures work and storage areas are organized and safe.

Fire & Life Safety:

1. Assists in conducting fire safety drills and adheres to fire safety regulations.

2. Executes all repair and maintenance tasks safely, in compliance with relevant safety regulations.

3. Maintains a secure environment for residents, families, and staff through:

accident prevention,

knowledge of emergency protocols,

safe use of supplies and equipment, and reporting repair needs, along with

adherence to infection control measures.

Maintenance Oversight:

1. Keeps a detailed log of daily routines, general repairs, and both scheduled and unscheduled maintenance tasks for all equipment.

Team Collaboration:

1. Provides guidance or training to staff operating community equipment.

2. Takes initiative in acquiring knowledge and skills relevant to the maintenance role.

3. Actively engages in the orientation of new staff, community programs, meetings, committees, and educational sessions.

4. Works positively and collaboratively with all team members and supervisors.

5. Maintains a professional appearance, wearing clean, safe, and appropriate clothing.

6. Utilizes rubber-soled, steel-toed safety footwear when necessary.

7. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Skills:

1. Minimum of 1 year of experience in building or community maintenance.

2. Proficient in general tasks related to painting, plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, heating systems, and gardening.

3. Familiarity with safety regulations and best practices.

4. Basic computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office and various maintenance software.

5. Proven ability to prioritize and organize maintenance schedules and workload.

6. Strong communication skills to interact professionally with residents, staff, visitors, and contractors.

7. Successful candidates must pass a vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check as per provincial guidelines.

8. Physical ability to push, pull, stoop, crouch, lift, and carry up to 50 lbs. Must be able to work with cleaning agents and equipment.

9. Ability to work independently and follow instructions with minimal supervision.

10. Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English, with the ability to understand verbal and written instructions.
