Island Health is seeking a highly skilled Physician Associate to join our team in Adult In-Patient Care. As a Physician Associate, you will work under the supervision of an Attending Physician to provide high-quality patient care and support the provision of continuous care in a team-based environment.
Key Responsibilities- Participate in patient rounds under the supervision of the Attending along with residents and other care team members.
- Assess the day-to-day care of patients, including writing medical orders, consultations with other services, and responding to changing patient conditions.
- Develop treatment plans in response to changing patient conditions.
- Follow through on investigations.
- Provide medical consultation for specialty services or provide transfer of care if appropriate.
- Assess whether or not a patient requires involuntary admission under the Mental Health Act.
- Conduct discharge planning, including reviewing medication reconciliation, patient teaching, liaising with community partners, and booking follow-up treatments as appropriate.
- Medical degree from a school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools.
- Minimum of two years of accredited postgraduate training as a medical or surgical specialist, verified by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.
- Successful completion of Part 1 of the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) or Steps 1 through 3 of the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLEs).
- Must meet the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia's English language proficiency requirements.
- Must be eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia in the Physician Associate class, under sponsorship by Island Health.
- Must hold Canadian Citizenship, be a permanent resident, or be legally able to live and work in British Columbia.
- Knowledge and skills to diagnose and manage common medical problems in the medical and perioperative patient.
- Confidence and experience in recognizing and initiating response to emergency situations.
- Excellent English communication skills, including with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals.
- Computer and written communication skills, including order entry, clinical documentation, and ability to review relevant diagnostic information and health history.
- Ability and comfort in working in a team-based environment.
- Ability to carry out professional duties in the face of multiple, competing demands.
During a 12-week probationary period, the Physician Associate will undergo assessment and evaluation of their competence to perform the duties in the intended specialty areas under a supervising physician. The evaluation will include assessment of basic clinical skills, communication skills, ability and willingness to function as a member of a clinical team, specialized knowledge and skills applicable to the intended clinical placement, clinical decision-making, and clinical documentation.
