Position Overview:

The Surveying and Geomatics Technician plays a crucial role in supporting the educational activities within the Centre for Construction & Engineering Technologies. This position involves assisting with the upkeep of surveying instruments and facilities utilized by students during practical field exercises. In the GIS/geomatics lab, the technician ensures that all plotters, computers, and scanners are functioning optimally, while also managing the electronic files essential for laboratory operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Surveying and Geomatics Technologist to prepare necessary equipment for fieldwork.
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols and procedures among students.
  • Demonstrate the use of various surveying instruments, including leveling tools, total stations, and GPS devices.
  • Facilitate student learning by reinforcing theoretical concepts and practical skills taught by faculty, while assisting with calculations in both lab and field settings.
  • Support faculty in evaluating student performance when required.
  • Work alongside professors to trial new field activities.
  • Maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment in compliance with safety standards.
  • Provide input on preventative maintenance schedules and equipment renewal plans to the Surveying and Geomatics Technologist.
  • Offer routine technical assistance to faculty, staff, and administrators within the school.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • A three-year diploma or degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field from a recognized institution.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in construction layouts, utilizing surveying equipment, and working with GIS software.
